Proofer
Info
The Type Proofer* application is a typeface display plugin which allows a user to test and experiment with Singularity Pt dynamically. All content is entirely adaptable and editable. A user may select from a designated range of optical variants, insert their own custom content, and then, with complete control (and using the control options, sliders and text area field), adjust type scale, leading, tracking and case in real time.
The characters of any of the pre-selected optical variants can be viewed between a range of both text and display nominal scales, giving a true insight into the tone of the typeface outlines. Play, experiment and enjoy.
Optical Cuts
Due to limitations in the integration of digital typography and format support in web browsers the automated optical scale of Singularity Pt cannot easily be showcased via a digital medium. For this reason a number of various optical cuts or variants have been provided for user selection. These restrictions in application have the benefit of meaning that meaning that a user is able to scale each optical cut between text and display sizes for a true representation of character outlines.
A selection of optical variants are integrated into the Type Proofer for digital output, based on standardised type size increments. As opposed to something more arbitrary this progression, based on the values of early hot metal type, form a cohesive range of type sizes, each variant representative of a point on Singularity Pt's optical scale and best adjusted for legibility and style at its nominal output size.
The traditional scale progresses as; 6 8 9 10 11 & 12pt (sizes for setting extended text with comfortable legibility), 14 18 & 24pt (subhead scale, complimentary to body text and commonly used for typesetting pull quotations), and 30 36 48 60 & 72pt (display sizes, used to showcase the elegance of letterforms and detailing for enhanced visual appeal).
Smaller point sizes require finer granularity, hence why the list progression begins in smaller steps. The majority of sizes are divisible by six, making them both easily halved and divisible by three, creating contrast in size and complimenting other optical variants.
Colophon
Type Proofer developed as 'Type-Tester', a generic type display solution, for Monokrom, an independent type foundry based in Oslo, Norway, founded by Frode Helland and Sindre Bremnes.
Plugin built by developer Michiel Vancoillie, a self-employed computer science engineer and founder of Underlined, a creative design and coding agency specialising in everything web based.
The Type Proofer plugin has been adapted with a custom style and integrated into this site, under agreed terms, with the kind permission of both Monokrom and Michiel Vancoillie.
*Type Proofer has no OpenType capabilities, therefore ligatures, alternate character and stylistic sets are not supported in this application. Characters entered and not present in the typeface character set will be replaced by Helvetica.
